About this experience
Antelope Canyon X, located southeast of Lower Antelope canyon by the gateway town of Page, Arizona, is named after the Xs carved into the Navajo Sandstone created by millions of years of rainfall and wind. This part of the canyon is chiseled out by millions of years’ worth of flood erosion and impactful winds on its sandstone, enough to sculpt out the iconic "X" shape that aptly named the canyon.
Canyon X is a relatively new scenic tour and the lesser-known cousin of Upper/Lower Antelope Canyon, which results in fewer visitors by comparison to the other two.
Canyon X is a mixture of the characteristics of both the Upper and Lower canyon, with the Upper’s feature of pillars of light and the Lower’s steepness. Canyon X is also deeper than the other two and brings ample photo opportunities. It truly is a great vacation spot for photography as well.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
Antelope Canyon X looks like a good fit if you want to explore two slot-canyon sections without committing to a longer photography-focused outing. The standard tour is 90 minutes; the photo option is three hours. I’d make that choice based on how much time you want for pictures, not just on whether you enjoy taking them. The practical details matter, too: you meet at the Highway 98 location, and arriving late means no refund.
Who I’d recommend it for
This suits visitors who want a guided canyon visit with some room to look around and take photos. The route includes two slot canyons, with a walk between them, and the tour begins with a 4×4 ride from the meeting point. I think it’s a particularly sensible option if you’d rather see more than one canyon section than spend the whole outing focused on a single photo setup.
Traveller feedback repeatedly highlights guides helping with pictures and sharing information about the canyon and Navajo culture. That can be valuable if you want more than a self-directed walk, though I wouldn’t assume every guide will offer the same specific photo help.
Choose the tour length around your camera plans
The standard hiking tour lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. The photo tour is three hours and is specifically intended for photography hobbyists; the option description allows one tripod and one bag per person. I’d choose the longer option if you genuinely want extra canyon time for photography or plan to use a tripod. For a general visit and phone snapshots, the standard outing seems the more proportionate choice.
The longer option is not just a small extension: it means committing to twice the stated duration. If you’re deciding mainly because you hope for better pictures, remember that the standard-tour feedback also describes guides helping groups take photos.
Plan for the meeting point and the walking
You meet at Highway 98 Milepost 308, roughly 12 miles east of Page; pickup elsewhere isn’t offered in the listed logistics. From there, the itinerary describes a 4×4 transfer three miles to the canyon mouth, a 100-meter hike in, and a walk to the second slot canyon. I’d build in a comfortable arrival margin rather than treating the tour time as the time to reach the meeting point.
Pay close attention to the time-zone information on your voucher and allow for possible time changes. The booking information explicitly warns that late arrivals are not refunded. The listed Navajo permit fee is $8 per person, while admission and bottled water are included.
Know the physical and booking trade-offs
Although the tour is listed as suitable for all fitness levels, it involves walking into and between canyon sections. It is not recommended for people with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health. I’d take those cautions seriously rather than reading the general fitness label as a guarantee that the route will suit everyone.
There’s also little flexibility if plans change: all sales are final, with no cancellation refund. The canyon is described as less visited than Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, but that comparison doesn’t promise a quiet or uncrowded experience on your particular departure.

Itinerary and highlights
The 1.5-hour Antelope Canyon X hiking tour begins at the Navajo Nation Reservation. After parking and payment, you are transported in a 4×4 transport vehicle 3 miles to the mouth of Antelope Canyon X, where you then hike 100 meters into Antelope Canyon X. At the bottom, tour guides assist you through a tour of the first slot canyon. After the first slot canyon is complete, guides accompany you on the 200-meter walk to the second slot canyon.
If you are choosing the photography tour, you will have 2.5 hours in canyon. This tour is for photography hobbyists, people looking to spend more time in the canyon and make use of a tripod.
